About Séamus Harris

Seamus Harris has been helping Chinese writers express themselves in English since 1996, and has edited thousands of documents by Chinese authors whose first language is not English.

Seamus became interested in the special needs of Chinese writers in English in 1996, while privately tutoring Chinese students at the University of Auckland, New Zealand. Seamus moved to Taiwan in 1998, where he spent four years living in Taipei and gaining further editing experience. Since 2003 Seamus has been living in Shanghai, where he continues to assist Chinese writers.

Highlights of Seamus' editing experience to date include:

  • Working as a financial editor at Yuanta Core Pacific Securities (the largest stock brokerage in Greater China)
  • Editing research papers for: the Ministry of Economic Affairs of Taiwan, the National Science Council of Taiwan, the Department of Health of Taiwan, and other Taiwanese government organizations.
  • Working as a curriculum developer (helping produce ESL materials and books) for the Innovation Incubation Center of National Qinghua University, Taiwan.

  • 1993 Completed a B.A. in History at the University of Auckland, New Zealand.
  • 1995 Completed an M.A. (First Class Honors) in History at the University of Auckland, New Zealand.
  • 1996 Studied Spanish and Indonesian languages part-time at the University of Auckland.

Freelance editor (current)

  • Editing technical papers written in English by Taiwanese academics, including papers for Taiwanese governmental organizations. I regularly edit papers for the Ministry of Economic Affairs of Taiwan, the National Science Council of Taiwan, the Department of Health of Taiwan, and so on.
  • Curriculum development projects, helping to produce ESL materials and books. Notable projects I have worked on include projects initiated by the Innovation Incubation Center of National Qinghua University, Taiwan.
  • Copy writing, mainly producing English language marketing materials for Taiwanese and Chinese companies.

  • Editing and writing financial research reports in English. I edited financial research reports on listed Taiwanese companies and the macroeconomic environment. I also wrote morning reports for clients, summarizing market movement and breaking news.

  • Teaching conversational and written English to Taiwanese college students at a private school

  • Primarily teaching writing skills to overseas students studying at the University of Auckland, as well as editing their academic papers. Most of my students were Chinese. It was while doing this work that I first developed an interest in the special problems faced by Chinese writers in English.
